PAN stands for Permanent Account Number that is a ten-digit number issued by Income Tax Department.

India is going through a big social reform and PAN Card is working as a big tool in it. As per Income Tax Department from fiscal 2017-2018, linking your PAN Card with Bank Account Number is mandatory. Modes to Apply for PAN Card

There are two options for you to apply for PAN Card.
  • First is traditional way of visiting centre and filling up application form.
  • Other one is to apply online and this is no doubt the faster and comfortable approach.

#1. How to apply PAN Card through visiting Center?

This methodology needs extra energy and time as for that; a) firstly you have to find out center near to you and then, b) visit there to fill up the form and attach required documents and photographs. It might seems to be a simple task but believe me, I have gone through the same and it is not that easy at all.  Thank God that you guys are born in 21st century and you have option of Online filling of PAN Card Application.
Must know things before Filling PAN Application Form at Center -
  • But be careful of filling any wrong information; erasing and cutting in Application form is not allowed.
  • Bring an original copy of your Adhaar Card with you at center along with the Xerox copy
  • Fill form in Block letters with black ink ball Pen.
  • Carry two latest Passport size photographs with you at center.

#2. How to Apply PAN Card Online Procedure?

Depending upon today’s busy life, applying for PAN Card through this mode is much more accurate and less time consuming.
No doubt Applying PAN online mode is a bit complicated for new applicants but if you look inside a bit deep then you will find out that it took comparatively lesser time as compare to the travel time of visiting center, standing there in queue and then filling the form.
Applying Online PAN Card has three major steps –
  • Filling Application form and making online payment
  • Taking print out of the form and associating required documents with it
  • Posting application form along with documents to the PAN Card Center Pune via Post Office
Once, you follow these steps, your online PAN card apply is done without any hassle.
Filling Application Form and Making Payment
  • After clicking the link, a page will open on your screen and in its first column select New PAN card apply for Indian Citizen.
  • After clicking the link, you will be relocated to a new page that will be more like a form asking your personal details.  
  • Once you have that page, select the type of PAN Card you are applying for. It includes PAN card for a) PAN Card for Indian Citizen (Form 49A), b) PAN Card for Foreign Citizen (Form 49AA), and c) Changes for correction or reprinting of application form. 
  • All next columns are easy to fill as they ask for your personal details, like if you are Male then choose SHRI, or in case you are married female then SMT., unmarried female needs to choose Kumari.
  • Further, fill your surname and middle name in the given block; if you don’t have a middle name then leave it blank
  • Further, the form will ask you to fill your Date of Birth, Email ID and Mobile Number; make sure you have not done any silly mistake while filling these information. 
  • Once you complete filling of your personal details, there comes the need of filling the CAPTCHA code that is nothing but an alphanumeric code written on lower side and at the end of the form. The CAPTCHA code is needed to be filled correctly as it is the authentication process to show that you are not a bot. 
  • When all these columns are correctly filled, click the 'submit' button. After clicking submit button, a temporary token number is generated and clicking continue will take you to the verification page.
  • There are three procedures through which authorities will verify your documents. Those three procedures are, a) e-KYC, b) eSign and c) forwarding PAN card Application online documents manually through post. 
  • If you are an Adhaar Card holder and your Adhaar card registered mobile number is with you then e-KYC is the best option; it will skip next both stages (print out stage and post office stage) for you.
  • In e-KYC, just fill up a short form that ask for Adhaar Number and One-time password(OTP) that arrives on your phone number after filling up the form and clicking 'Next' button
  • In eSign, you are also saved from extra work and like e-KYC,  you also require to upload your scanned images of documents.
  • After filling Adhaar number and your parents details, you will have to click "Next" button and you will be directed to Contact Detail Form. In e-Sign and e-KYC options, you don’t need to write Address details as they are taken up from your Adhaar card automatically. Only vacant spaces are need to filled like Source of Income, etc. 
  • Once you complete this, click the 'Next' button and you will be taken to the AO Code page where you have to write your AO Code detail which you will get from the web link. You can get your AO code just by choosing your city name or you can also get AO Code details through the Income Tax department helpline number (18001801961).
  • In the end, you have to choose documents you want to give as your proof of identity and proof of address. In case you have opt out e-KYC, you need not to submit any documents, however, e-Sign option documents and signature upload along with passport size photograph is necessary.
  • In physical verification option, just choose document you want to use as a proof and for address proof, you can submit below written documents.

For address proof​
  • Elector’s Photo Identity card
  • Driving License 
  • Post Office Passbook having address of the applicant 
  • Passport
  • Latest property tax assessment order
  • Allotment letter of accommodation issued by the Central or State Government of not more than three years old
  • Property Registration certificate
  • Domicile certificate issued by the Government
For identity proof​
  • Electricity Bill
  • Landline Telephone Bill
  • Water Bill
  • Broadband Connection bill
  • Consumer gas connection card
  • Bank Pass Book with account statement
  • Depository account statement
  • Employer certificate
  • Certificate of address signed by a Gazetted Officer
  • Credit Card Statement
For identity proof​
  • Aadhar Card
  • Elector’s Photo Identity Card
  • Driving license
  • Passport
  • Matriculation Certificate or Mark sheet of recognized board (10th Standard in most cases)
  • Birth certificate
  • Photo identity card issued by the Central or State Government
  • Domicile certificate issued by the Government
  • Central Government Health Service Scheme card or Ex-servicemen Contributory
  • Pension Payment Order
  • Health Scheme photo card
  • Marriage certificate issued by the Registrar of Marriages
  • Affidavit Sworn before a Magistrate stating the date of birth

​Payment and final submission

  • Once you complete the declaration, the option of making payment is shown.   The PAN card online fees for the form is 107INR plus taxes that can be easily paid through Debit/Credit card or Net Banking.
  • Once you complete the same, a 15-digit acknowledgement number is shown on your screen. You can take the print out of that number or you can simply just see it in your mail.

  • As you download the Acknowledgement Form, you are required to fix your recent passport size photograph and attest it by your signature.
  • Further, in the provided box, you have to give your left thumb impression that should be done by black ink only.
  • After completing the process, you are required to attach the copy of documents you have declared previously.
  • Also, in case you have chosen to pay through cheque or D.D. then, put them along with acknowledgement form and documents in a decent envelope.

  • As you require to send the acknowledge form, you will have to buy an envelope and write "Application for PAN with your Acknowledgement Number." For example - (Application for PAN - “N-87889025678979)
  • Now, visit the post office and post the envelope to the nearby PAN card office of your area. 
  • Note: Your PAN Application must reach the PAN office within 15 days of filling the application. 

Tracking of Your PAN Card status

There are two ways to check the PAN Card status; 1) By checking online and, 2) By calling on toll free number.

  • By checking online
  • Tracking status of PAN Card is quite easy through the Acknowledgement Number.
  • After clicking the above mentioned link, a form will open up with blank column to fill up with correct information. The form should open up like this in the below mentioned image: - 
  • Now, fill in the above blank spaces, put the CAPTCHA code and submit. 
  • Once you will click the 'submit' button, the status of your card will flash on your screen.
  • By calling on toll free number
  • Another way to check the status of your applied PAN card application is to directly give a phone call at 020-27218080 or SMS NSDLPAN <space> Acknowledgement No. and send it to 57575.
